In honor of National Foreign Language Week, seventh- and eighth-grade students in Mrs. Pastore’s and Mrs. Guarini’s Spanish classes at Howard T. Herber Middle School in the Malverne Union Free School District (which includes student athletes) held a special fundraiser to benefit The Pulsera Project.
The Pulsera Project is a nonprofit organization that helps students across the U.S. empower the artists of the “pulseras” or bracelets from Nicaragua, Guatemala and Uganda. The proceeds create sustainable fair-trade jobs in these countries where few opportunities exist. The proceeds also fund scholarships, community programs, interest-free micro loans, support youth shelters, sustainable energy initiatives, social enterprise programs, and many other projects that create bright futures for these artists and their communities.
During lunch hour, students sold these bracelets to staff and peers. In total, the school raised $1,275 for the cause.
